5 WAYS TO ELEVATE DINING AT HOME
With most of our lives becoming more hectic throughout the year, we've gotten accustomed to grabbing something on the go. For some of us, a delivery man frequents our home more than dinner guests do. However, that doesn't mean even take out can't make it's way into a more gracious situation in our lives. I invite you to take a break, relax, and elevate your dining experience at home with a few simple tips.
1. ENJOY THE PROCESS
If you've decided to make your own meal, have fun with it. Turn on some music, drink a glass of wine while you're cooking. Live alone? Pretend you're Julia Child or Jamie Oliver and have a laugh with it. Making your own food shouldn't be a chore, so don't act like it. Use this time alone to try a new recipe. It will give you some time to work the kinks out, without anyone knowing you've had a chance to mess it up. Practice makes perfect, and having fun in the process, will definitely show in the cooking.
2. PLATE YOUR FOOD
Whether you've made your own food, or picked up some Sesame Chicken on your way home from work, take the time to actually plate your food. Don't just plop down with a box of rice and a metal tin of meat. Break out the plates, and serve yourself. Trust me, it always looks more appetizing when it's on a real plate.
3. SIT AT THE TABLE
Get away from the TV. Turn off your cellphone. Sit at the table, even if you're dining alone. You really can't fully enjoy your meal if you've spent most of the night leaning over the coffee table or precariously balancing a plate on your lap. Social media and sitcoms can wait for a moment. Use your meal to de-stress after a long day. Just enjoy the food, and especially your company if you have any over.
4. HAVE DESSERT
Marie Antoinette said it best with, "Let them eat cake." I believe in finishing a meal with something sweet. It doesn't have to be cake, however some fresh fruit or other light dessert can evenly round out your meal. Sweets not your thing? Finish up your evening meal with some coffee or a digestive tea.
5. DITCH THE PAPER PRODUCTS
For those of you who follow me in social media, you know I'm fond of dishes. I don't think it's too much to ask that when you sit down to your table, you should do it in style. Dining at home should be no exception. Set your table with real silverware, plates, and cloth napkins. Change your dining experience ad you'll enjoy it more.
